'Training is overlooked' for most workers
19/02/2008(17:36)

Almost half of employees think their training needs are overlooked at work, with almost one-third wanting to use the extra day in the leap year for training, according to a recent survey.

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) questioned over 1,000 employees to ask what they would most like to use the extra working day for, with training coming top.

A lack of communication exists between employees and employers with the survey showing 42 per cent employees think it is unlikely to give them training, but over 50 per cent of employers said they would.

LSC's previous survey has shown that employees can increase their salary by £2,000 to £3,000 per year by getting the right training.

Glenn Robinson, director of Train to Gain, said: "This is the perfect opportunity to speak to your employer and ask for the training you need.

"Improving your skills will help you take control of your future and will have as much impact on your career as it will on your general well being."

The survey also showed that 61 per cent of people think time is the biggest restraint to training and 49 per cent saying the expense of it puts them off.

Parents whose children have left home are being encouraged to go back to learning by the Learning and Skills Council.
