Birds Eye opens processing plant in Hull
24/06/2008(16:53)

The world's biggest pea processing plant has been opened by Birds Eye in Hull.

Operated by logistics firm Christian Salvesen, the 40,000 square foot factory will freeze around 50,000 tons of peas from the East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire area between June and August, thisishullandeastriding.co.uk reports.

Due to operate 24 hours a day during the summer harvesting season, Birds Eye will employ 165 workers at the £10 million site, divided over three shifts.

After freezing within two-and-a-half hours of being picked, the peas are stored in one ton blocks before being taken to the company’s Lowestoft plant for packaging and distribution.

They are then sent to retailers across the country.

Meanwhile, Skills for Logistics acting chief executive Dr Mike Jackson recently claimed that despite its importance the logistics sector is one of UK industry's "best kept secrets".

The sector offers a wide range of opportunities from warehouse staff to chief executives of multimillion pound logistics organisations, he said.
