Over 1,500 jobs could be created after Newcastle International Airport bought nearby land and buildings, according to the airport's bosses.
They have paid £450,000 to purchase Samson Aviation, which occupies an area to the south of the main airport site.
According to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, the airport's owners plan to develop a new £20 million business park on part of the site which will create space for more than one million square feet of space for offices, air freight, hangers and warehouses.
Dave Laws, chief executive of Newcastle International, told the newspaper that at least 1,500 jobs will be "generated by the development" which will build on the growing success of Samson.
"We now want to build on that success and have ambitious plans to grow business aviation and other light aircraft activity at Newcastle International over the coming years," he added.
A number of shipbuilding jobs at Newcastle's A&P yards were created after is signed contracts worth £53 million to provide maintenance to five navy support ships.
