Congestion plan 'to bring jobs to Manchester'
19/09/2008(14:32)

A proposed congestion charge could bring as many as 10,000 new jobs to Manchester, it has today been claimed.

The statement has been made in a report released by Arup on behalf of the Greater Manchester Transport Executive.

It is claimed the proposed Transport Innovation Fund, which involves £2.8 billion being invested in the area's transport and will see a Manchester toll implemented, would be a "direct boost" to the local economy.

Lord Smith, leader of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, told the BBC: "The ripple effect as a result of £3 billion investment could be worth up to £10 billion to the economy at a time of an economic slowdown."

The report states 5,800 new construction jobs would be created if the plans are passed, while almost 4,000 positions in the transport sector would need to be filled.

Meanwhile, a planning application put together by Manchester firm could create 150 jobs at a Wrexham industrial estate, reports the Evening Leader.
