Energy conference to discuss skills shortage
10/04/2008(17:08)

A major energy conference this week will discuss how to solve Australia's skill shortages in the sector.

Over 2,000 representatives of the sector will meet in Perth for the annual Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPE) meeting, reports ABC.

Included on the agenda for the gathering, whose attendees will include Shell's executive director for gas or power Linda Cook, will be the country's lack of skilled workers in the industry.

Belinda Robinson, chief executive of the APPE, said that attracting new sectors of the community to the industry will be on the agenda.

"Indigenous people, older people who have left the industry, we'll be looking at how we can entice them back, particularly to play mentor roles for the younger people."

"We're [also] undereprestented by women in this industry, so we'll be looking at all possible ways that we can increase the size of the pool," Ms Robinson added.

It was recently announced that a new gas field is to be constructed in Kipper field off the Victorian coast.
