Metrolink could create 3,000 jobs in Manchester
01/08/2008(15:49)

Greater Manchester's expanded Metrolink network could create over 3,000 jobs for the city, according to a new study.

Research done by Volterra, on behalf Manchester Enterprises, claims that the extra workforce would help boost the city's economy by an estimated £160 million over the next 18 years.

The Manchester Evening News reports that a referendum on the expansion of the network is set to take place later this year.

Mike Emmerich, chief executive of Manchester Enterprises, told the newspaper that the council should use this study to judge the merits of the Metrolink expansion.

"It is important to understand the impact the expansion programme would have on businesses, and the people who live and work in the region," he added.

The Metrolink report follows the parliamentary approval which has been given to London's Crossrail link.

Up to 30,000 jobs are reported to be created throughout the transformation of London's rail network.
