Rail link brings new jobs
24/09/2008(17:01)

Network Rail has awarded a new contract to Balfour Beatty Rail Projects (BBRP), it has been reported.

The £60 million deal, which will create jobs for the engineering and construction industries, is to lay a new track between Airdrie and Bathgate, according to Transport Briefing.

Construction is set to begin in 2009 while ground investigations are already underway.

Richard Adams, managing director of BBRP, told the publication the firm was delighted to have won the contract to create the highly anticipated link to Scotland's transport network.

"Fifty years after the original route was closed, the revival of this route will provide a highly beneficial service to several communities and we are proud to be playing such a significant part in making it possible," he added.

Ron McAulay, director of Network Rail Scotland, said the contract allows the organisation to deliver significant parts to the engineering project.

The link will re-establish passenger transport services through central Scotland.

Balfour Beatty was formed in 1909 by Scottish engineer George Balfour and English accountant Andrew Beatty.
