Concrete firm 'could create 125 jobs'
26/08/2008(14:49)

Over 100 new jobs could be created by a concrete firm in the Midlands after it lodged a planning application to extend its premises.

Bison, who has premises in Swadlincote, has applied to build over 5,500 square feet of new office space which could generate 125 jobs according to the employer.

The Burton Mail reports that the concrete firm made 31 workers redundant at the end of 2007 and campaigners are opposed to the expansion plans due to the land previously being set-aside for leisure development by the council.

Clare Orme, who lives near to the site, told the newspaper that Bison's application "contravenes the local plan".

"If this went ahead it would set a precedent for the other firms there to expand and for other companies to apply for permission," she added.

Mining firm ATH Resources recently revealed plans for a new opencast mine in Scotland which could create up to 100 jobs.

The BBC reports that Dumfries and Galloway Council had approved the plans, with the Scottish government set to give the final go-ahead.
