06/10/2008(11:55)

A leading bank in Australia has pledged its support to a new jobs drive campaign.

Commonwealth Bank, one of the big four bank's in the country, is set to help the Geelong Advertiser's Ford jobs campaign.

It told the newspaper it will provide financial planning assistance to people who may lose their jobs at the firm over the coming months.

Ford is planning to axe jobs over the next two years, beginning next month.

Tim Gunning, financial planning general manager at the Commonwealth Bank, told the newspaper it would offer free seminars to employees and also "waive advice fees".

"Some of these people will be getting large amounts of money and it's important that they invest the money wisely and make it work for them, especially in these uncertain times," he added.

Steve Bracks, the former premier of Victoria, recently told the Sydney Morning Herald that the government needs to invest in Australia's struggling car manufacturing industry.

He handed a report to the government, which has been backed by Kim Carr, the minister for industry.
