New Welsh superstore 'to create 200 jobs'
25/01/2008(16:07)

Over 200 jobs could be created if plans by Tesco to build a superstore in Wales go ahead, according to a source.

The supermarket giant already has permission for a smaller store but has submitted plans for a bigger one, with a petrol station and a new link road, according to the BBC.

Currently shoppers in the Powys area have to cross the border to England in order to get their weekly shop, sometimes travelling 40 miles.

The local council will consider the plans in March, which include £500,000 towards a new link road and building a new scout hut and youth centre.

Ken Richards, the town's deputy mayor, told the news provider: "The town council supports the re-submitted plans and the majority of the town has been supportive since the plans for the supermarket were first mooted."

The nearest supermarket to inhabitants of Llandrindod Wells is in Newtown, which is 28 miles away.

Recently Tesco announced proposals for a bigger store in Peterborough which would create over 100 jobs, according to the Evening Telegraph.
