Defence jobs could be moved
15/09/2008(16:55)

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is to make an announcement on the future of a Shropshire RAF base which recently missed out on a £16 billion contract.

After the Metrix Consortium won the contract last year, it was expected that many jobs would move from RAF Cosford to RAF Athan in south Wales.

However, rising cost associated with the economic downturn have raised questions over whether the move is viable, reports the BBC.

The MoD has insisted that the move is still on the cards and plans to clarify its position in the near-future.

After reviewing defence training requirements, Defence Secretary Des Browne said the MoD would implement a new service at RAF Athan, creating some 5,000 jobs.

The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) has opposed the decision in an attempt to keep the jobs at the Shropshire base.

Elsewhere, the MoD recently signed a multi-million pound submarine contract with UK research establishment QinetiQ.
