A number of jobs could be created in the north-east, including some in logistics, following the announcement that Amec is the preferred bidder for a new contract with the National Grid.
Amec will be working on the development and upgrading of overhead power lines during the next five years in a contract that is worth 500 million, reports the Northern Echo.
The project management and services company currently employs around 600 people in its Darlington-based construction, industrial, support services and logistic divisions, the newspaper states.
However, dozens more jobs are due to be created in the inaugural year of the project, with further employment opportunities arising later on.
Amec chief executive Samir Brikho told the newspaper: "This major electricity alliance contract, similar to our alliance with National Grid for gas networks, underlines Amec's expertise in providing long-term asset support for the energy infrastructure sector."
Clients of Amec include AstraZeneca, BAA, BNFL and BP.
