Essential Responsibilities:

Working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, you will be responsible for applying scientific skills and analytical techniques to assist with development and improvement of products or processes at GE's Global Research Center.


  • Participate in a diverse range of programs at GE Global Research especially those that require a broad understanding of minerals and other materials.
  • Perform chemical microanalyses of geological, metallurgical, ceramic, and other materials within the Materials Characterization organization.
  • Effectively communicate to other researchers at GE Global Research and the GE businesses to provide consultation, written reports, and verbal presentations describing methods, analytical data, and interpretation of results.
  • Collaborate with experts in other characterization techniques to provide solutions for GE Global Research and the GE businesses.
  • Handle multiple projects and stay on schedule for project deliverables, while maintaining very high data quality standards.
  • Leverage contacts within the greater scientific community to build fruitful collaborations
  • Involved in proposal writing and represent GE in relevant technical communities.
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Material Science or a related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in the following OR a Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Material Science or a related discipline with at least 3 years of experience in the following:


    • Experience using electron beam instruments to image, analyze, and interpret mineral microstructure and chemical variations in sediments or rocks.


  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • Experience in mineralogy with an understanding of solid state mineral reactions, crystallography, and phase identification.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with mineral dust and aerosols
  • Understanding of high temperature geochemistry processes
  • Understanding and experience working with alloys or ceramics
  • Ability and eagerness to learn and shift efforts as needed to new materials, technologies and skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
  • The personality, work ethic, and flexibility to work in a fast paced laboratory environment.
