Basic Function:
Provide a safe, fun and quality camping experience for assigned group of campers. Assist in the implementation of activities of the daily camp program, understand the needs of campers and exercise appropriate judgment in order to meet the needs of the campers.

Responsibilities:
  • Under direction, ensure that the activities of this position and all relevant programs are consistent with the mission, vision and values of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland.
  • Supervise and lead a unit of campers.
  • Assist and guide in the planning and implementation of programs of organized recreation and socialization for campers including activities, projects and games as well as outdoor opportunities which allow all campers to feel capable and successful.
  • Act according to procedure/risk management plan in the event of health or other emergency or in the event of other unforeseen incidents.
  • Help educate camp counselors with camper issues, eg, homesickness, bed wetting, camp policy and procedures and care of campers.
  • Assist campers with restroom trips and personal care as needed.
  • Help to resolve issues and concerns. Work with supervisor(s) to resolve greater issues.
  • Inform supervisor(s) of any problems or incidents that might become a concern for parents, campers or staff.
  • Ensure campers are participating in all program areas in a manner that would not cause harm to themselves, others or the environment.
  • Promote cabin cleanliness and camper health.
  • Work to develop community and spirit.
  • Be aware of all special needs and concerns of campers and staff.
  • Conduct appropriate correspondence with parents which may include conversation with parents; answering questions from parents; or relating information as requested or as needed.
  • Complete and maintain appropriate paperwork which includes, but not limited to, camper reports, statistics, evaluations, incident reports, attendance logs, schedule logs, staff sign-in/sign-out sheets and others as assigned.
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings with camp counselors to discuss camper issues and other communications.
  • Participate in staff training and Sunday staff meetings.
  • Maintain supplies for use in program.
  • Assist in end of day clean up by making certain that all equipment, supplies and facilities are cleaned and prepared for use.
  • Encourage and support other staff members in their job responsibilities.
  • May ride buses with campers to and from camp as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to accomplish objectives

Description Requirements:

  • Combination of education and experience normally represented by a High School diploma or equivalent with six months to a year experience working with children/youth.
  • Coursework or experience in a Human Services related field preferred.
  • Previous camping experiences a plus.
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR or attained through training during orientation.
  • If driving, must be 21 years of age at time of hire.
  • If driving, must have a valid Ohio Driver's License, provide copy of driver's license, and are subject to a Moving Vehicle Report (MVR) check through the Department of Motor Vehicles annually. Any MVR grade of 'unacceptable' is not permitted to operate a vehicle on behalf of Catholic Charities.
  • Knowledge of the growth of children and concern for their emotional, physical, social and spiritual needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of camper information including but not limited to behavioral issues, health concerns and other facts unique to campers.
  • Enjoy the outdoors.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.
  • Ability to make quick decisions in life threatening situations.
  • Flexible and good at working in a team atmosphere. Willingness to assume multiple roles and job assignments through the summer.
  • If resident camp counselor, must be able to live on premises for the duration of camp programming including living in a cabin with campers.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, squat and reach above head.
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to physically assist campers to stand, sit, use restroom and walk.
  • Must have good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be well organized, detail oriented and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to show patience and courtesy when working with people.
