Microsoft Legal and Corporate Affairs (LCA) is looking for an attorney to help provide legal support for Microsoft Research http://research.microsoft.com and its development labs, technology incubations and academic relations team. Microsoft Research conducts both basic and applied research across a wide range of technologies, laying the foundation for breakthrough technologies like the Microsoft Kinect gesture recognition technology for games and other interactive computing experiences. This attorney may also support related groups incubating new businesses for Microsoft.
This attorney will provide day-to-day counseling for a variety of research and incubation teams on the legal issues they confront. These include technology transactions; collaborations with academics, research institutions and other companies; and counseling on intellectual property, open source, privacy, and other regulatory issues.
This attorney will work as part of the team of legal professionals supporting the Server and Tools Business, Microsoft Research, and related divisions, and will work closely with the legal teams for other product groups as well as legal specialists providing corporate policy, regulatory, and intellectual property support. This position will be based in Redmond, Washington.
Key responsibilities will include:
Providing creative and proactive counseling and training on a broad range of complex legal, business, and policy issues for clients engaged in research, product incubations and collaborations with industry and academia.
Drafting and negotiating agreements in support of these activities.
High level of client interaction to understand and advise on emerging technologies.
Coordinating work with other team members supporting research functions across the U.S. and around the world.
Driving process-related improvements to increase efficiency.
Building strong client relationships and becoming a trusted advisor to the world's premier computer science research lab.
Successful candidates must have:
J.D. from an ABA accredited law school, excellent academic credentials
At least 4 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
Experience with intellectual property issues and drafting and negotiating technology agreements.
Familiarity with open source, software licensing, privacy law, and contracting with academia is a plus.
They must have a genuine passion for technology, and an interest and aptitude for learning about cutting edge and complex new technologies.
They will need to collaborate well with colleagues, and be effective in managing projects and working across group boundaries to drive results for their clients and the company.
They must possess a strong client service focus and the ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-dimensional projects.
They will need to be flexible in adjusting to workload fluctuations.
They must have excellent analytic, oral and written communication skills.
