The Products & Services group within Microsoft's legal department is looking for a dynamic, highly motivated attorney to join our team at Microsoft's global headquarters near Seattle, Washington.

This role will have a particular focus on helping advance Microsoft product teams' work in interoperability, open standards and open source software, and will help support Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned Microsoft subsidiary focusing on these important company priorities.

Primary Duties:

Provide proactive legal and business counseling to clients and design creative solutions for business, technical, and legal issues
Advise clients on a broad range of topics including open source licensing and compliance, intellectual property, contract interpretation, corporate governance, employment and immigration law, and regulatory compliance
Work very closely with clients and other professionals on community engagement, public relations, and collaboration with open source communities, foundations and standards organizations.
Advise executives at all levels on how Microsoft policies and evolving laws and regulations may affect our businesses
Draft and negotiate legal contracts including development, licensing, and marketing agreements
Manage outside counsel budget

We are looking for an attorney with:

JD or license to practice law in the US
At least 2 years of experience as a practicing commercial attorney
Outstanding communication and team collaboration skills
Keen business sense, with the ability to find creative business-oriented solutions to legal issues, and a focus on balancing legal risks against business interests
Strong results orientation with a dedicated client focus
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Desire to work with diverse internal groups, teams, divisions, and cultures
Passion for technology
Prior experience working on open source, software licensing, or software development experience is a plus!
