SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Vice President and Group Counsel - Corporate, the successful candidate will assist in providing legal counsel to one or more departments or operating units, including corporate finance, corporate development, investment management, marketing, and certain operations functions. The individual may perform special legal assignments independently, and must demonstrate sound legal judgment, experience and reasoning. Insurance experience is not required, but a desire to develop a solid understanding of the company's operations and priorities, to complement the effectiveness of the role, is expected.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assists in providing legal services to one or more departments or operating units.
- Contributes to developing and maintaining ongoing relationships and accountability for the unit(s) being served.
- Counsels management, as appropriate, under supervision of more experienced counsel.
- May be responsible for handling, under supervision, major legal tasks involving complex legal and factual issues for which sound legal judgment, experience, and independent reasoning is required.
- Evaluates factual information, and provides research, counsel, and guidance on legal questions or issues.
- Prepares memoranda and legal documents. Maintains client contact to receive work, render opinions, and consult and advise; some work handled without supervision or consultation.

Position Requirements

- Juris Doctorate required with 5-7 years of experience, must have at least 4 years of experience at sophisticated law firm within corporate practice including SEC compliance matters and contract drafting.
- Candidate must be licensed to practice law and in good standing.
- Integrates and balances big-picture concerns with day-to-day activities.
- Efficiently meets business partner needs.
- Knows how to accomplish and resolve matters through formal organizational channels and through informal networks.
- Is viewed as an internal resource capable of practically applying technical expertise to real business problems and/or opportunities.
- Continues to develop in-depth knowledge and functional expertise in select professional disciplines.
- Surfaces problems and issues before projects become derailed.
- Addresses customer/partner needs by involving the right people (resources) at the right time, understanding the ultimate objectives, being responsive and developing more creative solutions.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong analytical ability, critical and strategic thinking skills and attention to detail.
- Commitment to results; project management skills to ensure appropriate execution.
