Photonic Component Scientist The Laser Technologies Group (LTG) of CEWD is seeking a highly motivated scientist to support existing and future research programs within the Group. This position has a specific focus on designing and fabricating photonic components for fibre lasers. The suitably qualified person will be required to design and develop advanced capabilities for the manufacture of photonic components for a wide variety of fibre Laser architectures. The person will also be required to manufacture the individual photonic components and then characterise their performance, as components and holistically within Laser systems. The major responsibilities of the role will be to work individually or as part of a multi-disciplinary team, which is undertaking challenging research on military fibre lasers in order to achieve specific defence outcomes. The successful applicant will under general direction undertake the following major duties: Contribute to military Laser research in the following areas: Conduct research into novel techniques for manufacturing photonic components for fibre lasers Design and develop bespoke fabrication capabilities o Fabricate advanced photonic components Design and conduct experiments to characterise the performance of the individual components o Design and conduct experiments to evaluate the performance of the final Laser systems containing the bespoke photonic components. Provide technical and professional input to outsourced programs of work. Preparation of technical papers, specifications, manuals and research reports of the work conducted. Presentation via briefings and seminars of the work conducted. Conduct of and support to client demonstrations. The management of facilities The applicant will need to demonstrate an aptitude for Laser research, ideally focussing on the development of component technologies for fibre lasers. It is essential that the applicant demonstrate experience with CO2 Laser processing of optical fibres. Furthermore, the applicant should be able to demonstrate experience designing and manufacturing a wide variety of photonic components such as cladding light strippers, endcaps, WDMs, combiners, couplers and tapers. A demonstrated ability to research methods for developing new capabilities to deliver state of the art photonic components for fibre lasers would be highly regarded. The applicant will have a high level of written and oral communications skills and will be able to demonstrate this by reference to both written products and examples of oral communications (eg presentations, mentoring, and knowledge transfer) in the technical domain.
