Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) - MongoDB/Percona/AWS/Terraform Fully remote (EU) | 12 month contract | Aviation sector

We are recruiting a Database Reliability Engineer to embed with a leading aviation operator, taking ownership of reliability, performance and observability across their production database estate.
This is deep, hands-on engineering. You will be the accountable engineer for the estate, not a ticket handler and not an advisor.

The environment: MongoDB is the primary technology, with Percona and MySQL as a genuine second pillar and PostgreSQL also in scope. Everything runs on AWS and is provisioned and managed through Terraform.

What you will own:

• Reliability and availability across the MongoDB and SQL estate
• Performance tuning: query analysis, index strategy, schema review, scaling decisions
• Backup, recovery and disaster recovery, designed and actively tested against defined objectives
• Observability and alerting using Prometheus, Grafana, PMM or equivalent
• Incident response and root cause analysis
• Infrastructure automation in Terraform

Essential experience:

• Deep, hands-on MongoDB: replica sets, sharding, index and query optimisation, upgrades, and backup and DR you have built and tested yourself
• Strong Percona and MySQL: Percona Server, XtraDB Cluster or MySQL at production scale, including replication topology and operational ownership
• Solid AWS: running databases on AWS, including RDS and Aurora, plus networking, IAM, storage and monitoring
• Genuine Terraform depth: modules you have authored and maintained, state management, deployment pipelines
• 5+ years hands-on database administration in production
• Strong communication. This is a customer-facing, Embedded role

Highly desirable:
Experience running database estates in finance, payments, trading, gambling or telecoms, or another environment where downtime is immediately visible and expensive. Aviation, aerospace or safety-critical experience equally welcome. Consulting or customer-facing background is valued.

Not suitable for: Data Engineer, BI Developer or Data Scientist backgrounds. This is hands-on database operations. Candidates without Terraform or AWS experience cannot be considered.

Process: Initial technical assessment, followed by two interviews with the client.
