Developer I (UI/UX) (Full Time)

Location: Cleveland, Ohio Country: United States of America

OverDrive is hiring a Front End Developer to help us build attractive, creative, and technically sound library, retail, and marketing sites. This person will provide web design and development for OverDrive UI/UX and marketing web initiatives, including corporate branding, product marketing, A/B testing, user research, prototyping, and initiatives from other departments as needed. This position utilizes creativity, innovative ideas and concepts to create promotional websites that enhance the user experience and increase conversion rates. This position may also include researching new technologies to determine if they can be applied to OverDrive products and projects.

What you will work on:

The majority of your time will be working on building websites, utilizing a lot of JavaScript, HTML and CSS development.

A couple examples of recent projects that the team has worked on:

  • Biglibraryread.com project. The website has a lot of constant, and instant user interaction. Most websites have a waiting process for data to accrue or a bug to arise, but BLR contains a message board where users can instantly interact with the site and each other. This is particularly rewarding when the program starts, and you get to sit back and see people use and enjoy your work. Using service workers to provide an offline experience in the browser.
  • Staff Training redesign project. This project used a category hierarchy to pull lists of the Staff Training videos, which the Training team will be able to add on their own, and the lists can be controlled with a short code that was created so that anyone can customize which market or category will display. It will also count the number of videos in a given category in the content filter section automatically. JavaScript was used to pull the video durations so that they'll calculate automatically, and on a single video page the Related Videos will pull videos that exactly match the same categories so that they'll always automatically be relevant. Best of all, utilizing WordPress to create the videos, they'll show up in internal site searches.

Our tech stack mostly consists of JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS/HTML, Wordpress.

What we are looking for in candidates:

We are looking for passionate Front End developers that will make our teams and websites better. At a minimum you'll have a solid grasp of web development basics. You should feel comfortable making web applications interactive using JavaScript and aesthetically styling them with CSS. We don't have any expectation that you are an expert in, or have even used, any of today's popular web frameworks (we aren't currently using Angular, React, or the like).

You should be comfortable giving and receiving feedback on code and design, suggesting improvements to applications or processes, and be able to communicate well in person and in writing.

Candidates should feel strongly about providing an excellent user experience based on analytics, research and user feedback and be willing to work as a team to do so. Experience creating web sites that follow accessibility and localization best practices is a highly desired.

Candidates should have experience creating reliable website development and troubleshooting issues.
