We value innovation, creativity, integrity, and a shared commitment to the bright young people we serve.*General Summary/Purpose:*The CTY Online Tutorial Assistant - Math will work with online instructors and supervisors to complete a variety of tasks related to math course instruction and delivery. Each Tutorial Assistant will work with one or two subject areas, such as: elementary mathematics, competitive mathematics, cryptology, chess, other enrichment courses, middle school mathematics, high school mathematics, AP mathematics, and college level mathematics.This position will primarily support our Chess program offering. Currently, our program offers the following chess courses:Introduction to Chess Grades 4 - 12 at to Chess provides new or beginning students of chess a strong foundation in the rules and strategies needed to play the game of chess. The course is designed for students with little to no experience with chess.The course begins with a brief history of the game of Chess. It then introduces the student to the board and pieces, explaining through interactive lessons, quizzes, videos and games how each piece moves. A full chess game is built up through the nine chapters, with students trying to defeat a computerized Johns Hopkins Blue Jay in chess at the end of every chapter. The last two chapters have the students play against the computer (the JHU Blue Jay) in full chess games of varying difficulty. The course ends with general tactics and strategies to improve the student's game.The course teaches the rules of the game, basic strategy, important opening concepts, recognition of tactical themes, calculation of material exchanges, and elementary endgame knowledge. In addition to learning the fundamentals of chess, this course will promote the growth and development of skills in concentration, logic, decision making, planning, and self-discipline.This course will contain regular forum discussions and optional synchronous meeting sessions to encourage a community of chess enthusiasts! Students will also have the opportunity to participate in training games against bots at any time as well as against and their fellow students at the Monday Night Games.Intermediate Chess Grades 4 and above at Chess is a continuation of CTY's online Introduction to Chess at course. Intermediate Chess introduces students to commonly seen tactics and strategies in the game of chess. The course is designed for students with sound knowledge of the rules of chess and some knowledge of basic tactical and strategic ideas.Starting with theory of the opening, students learn numerous tactical motifs and strategic goals to employ throughout the different stages of a game of chess, as well as ideas to use when evaluating a board position. Concepts are explained through interactive lessons, game studies, quizzes, and videos. Games against increasingly difficult computer opponents cap every chapter, culminating with a final game against the CTY Instructor.Instructors will provide individualized feedback and elaborate on concepts students have learned in the course. Students can also participate in training in CTY's weekly online chess clubs and biannual chess tournaments.In addition to learning chess strategy and tactics, this course will promote the growth and development of skills in concentration, logic, decision-making, planning, and self-discipline.*NOTE:* This position is not benefits eligible.*NOTE:* Multiple positions available. This position is telework eligible.*Responsibilities:*Math Tutorial Assistant responsibilities will vary, and may include:+ Staffing, leading, or working with students in clubs for courses related to chess, cryptology, competitive math, and other enrichment topics.+ Running, planning, staffing, and troubleshooting weekly group sessions for traditional and enrichment courses via videoconferencing technologies.+ Proofreading, editing, and monitoring the quality and accuracy of final course evaluation documents submitted by instructors in a given course.+ Assisting with course development tasks as assigned through implementing changes provided.+ Assisting with quality control and ensuring all courses meet accessibility guidelines.+ Communicating regularly with instructors and supervisors.+ Working as a team member to provide support to CTY Online Programs instructors and supervisors, as necessary.+ Submitting hours worked via established system according to schedule provided by CTY.+ Additional duties as assigned.Other Duties+ Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
