The Baylor College of Medicine, John Welsh Cardiovascular Diagnostic Laboratory (JWCVDL) is recruiting for a Medical Genetics Tech II position. The JWCVDL is a clinical diagnostic lab responsible for testing patients with cardiovascular diseases using molecular and genetic methodology including next generation sequencing (NGS). The position would principally involve in NGS, library construction, hybrid capture methods, array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH), and Sanger sequencing confirmation in a CAP/CLIA environment. The candidate should be able to work independently and within a team to process samples for both genetic and viral. Qualified candidates should be good at multi-tasking, problem-solving, and have strong communication skills. He/she should be flexible and adapt to the clinical environment and commit to finishing JWCVDL goals in a timely manner.

Job Responsibilties
  • Process samples according to lab procedures including library construction, and hybridization for NGS.
  • PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing methods for variant validation.
  • Maintenance of instruments such as MiSeq, ABI 3730XL, Agilent c-Scanner, NanoDrop, etc.
  • Sequence on platforms such as Illumina MiSeq and ABI 3730XL instruments.
  • aCGH with Agilent platforms.
  • Update LIMS, sample tracking and project summary using excel sheets.
  • Perform routine laboratory equipment maintenance and log records as required.
  • Collect, compile, evaluate and analyze data. Interpret detailed assay procedures and test results.
  • Troubleshoot problematic results for library construction, capture and sequencing methods.
  • Track the inventory for reagents and report to team leader when further order is needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Required: Bachelor s degree in Molecular Genetics Technology or a related field.
  • Required: One year of relevant experience.
  • Molecular biology skills including nucleic acid extraction, PCR reactio, NGS and Sanger sequencing experience.
  • Required: Certified Laboratory Professional by National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), Certified Medical Laboratory Technician by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification. Certification must be obtained within one year of hire or promotion.
