Position Overview

Inspects machinery, equipment, and working conditions in the construction setting to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Inspects machines and equipment for accident prevention devices
  • Observes workers to determine use of prescribed procedures, best practices, and safety equipment, such as glasses, hard hats, goggles, respirators and clothing
  • Inspects specified areas for fire-prevention equipment, LOTO equipment, and other safety and first-aid supplies
  • Tests working areas for noise, toxic, and other hazards, using decibel meter, gas detector, and light meter
  • Document all accidents, safety violations, unsafe conditions/activities within prescribed reporting timelines
  • Prepares timely report of findings with recommendations for corrective action/s
  • Investigates accidents to ascertain causes for use in recommending preventive safety measures and developing safety program/s
  • May demonstrate use of safety equipment
  • Delivers training/education in the field for compliance to all safety related matters
  • Ensures compliance with occupational safety and health regulations
  • Coordination of Safety programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses
  • Develops strong working relationships with field employees
  • Leads by example in terms of all safety standards at all times
  • Carries out all assigned tasks and projects in a timely manner
  • Assist with Human Resources with the recruitment/orientation processes
  • Additional assignments per EHS Manager's direction


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.


  • Bachelor's Degree of occupational safety/health preferred or equivalent combinations of training and related experience
  • At least 1 - 2 years of constructions and/or industrial safety experience
  • Smith System Instructor
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local and Company regulations

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement essential corrective measures
  • Solid training/teaching experience
  • Must be knowledgeable of Workers' Compensation laws
  • High ethical standards
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Can marshal resources (people, funding, material, support, etc.) to get things done
  • Must be able to orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously to accomplish a goal
  • Able to use resources effectively and efficiently and arrange information in a useful manner
  • Be able to be a strong voice in bringing the company's slogan of Safety First, Always to the forefront

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Able to communicate with others by telephone and in person
  • Able to utilize a computer for word processing, e-mail communication, and preparation of documents and presentations
  • Intermittent climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling are required
  • Periodic, but extensive walking and standing required
  • Must also be able to drive a vehicle and walk uneven terrain
  • May require periodically lifting objects up to 30 lbs.

Work Environment

  • May be exposed to extreme hot, cold and wet weather
