Optical Engineer - Tech Lead

At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Optical Engineer to join our Optical Product Development team at FRL. In this role, you will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and lead the end-to-end development of the future of Viewing Optics for our virtual reality (VR) products.

Optical Engineer - Tech Lead Responsibilities

• Define viewing optics architecture for VR products, including component and subsystem requirements.

• Establish engineering specifications, including key performance metrics, test methods, and test requirements for optical components and subsystems.

• Work with diverse and highly interdisciplinary team members: eg optical design & simulation, process development and supply chain, to develop and mature new technologies for the viewing optics subsystems.

• Lead development of viewing optics subsystems during New Product Introduction (NPI) to scale up for high volume manufacturing.

• Define future viewing optics technology roadmap and scope out New Technology Introduction (NTI).

Minimum Qualifications

• BS degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics or related fields with 5+ years of experience or equivalent experience.

• Experience in at least one optical design software package: eg Zemax, CODE V, LightTools, or FRED.

• Experience in at least one of these areas: visual optics or polarization optics or Imaging optics design and manufacturing or stray light molding and analysis or optical testing and metrology.

• Experience assigning project responsibilities and collaborate with the cross-functional teams to establish project goals.

• Experience communicating within a development team, with internal stakeholders and outside vendors.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics or related fields with 5+ years of experience.

• Experience in the combination of multiple of these areas: visual optics or polarization optics or Imaging optics design and manufacturing or stray light molding and analysis or optical testing and metrology.

• Track record of optical system engineering and product development into high volume manufacturing.
