Requisition Id 3328

Description of job:

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will support characterization efforts to develop a deeper understanding of nuclear energy-related materials and nuclear fuels. This work will explore characterization of as-fabricated nuclear fuel as well as post-irradiation examination. Materials systems of interest may include, but may not be limited to, ceramics, intermetallics, and metal alloy systems in either monolithic forms, coated particle fuel forms, or as hybrid composite structures. Research objectives are varied but will focus on connecting changes in microstructure, chemical composition, and/or correlated properties to material variables or irradiation conditions, through the application of various characterization approaches. The candidate is expected to interface with experimentalists and leverage a diverse suite of characterization tools (eg electron microscopy, mechanical testing) to make these connections.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will:

  • Perform experimental work in radiological materials laboratories centered on characterization of metals, ceramics, and composite materials
  • Produce high impact publications and conference presentations in the field of nuclear fuel materials
  • Work with team members in the areas of fuel fabrication, property measurements, materials testing, irradiation design, post irradiation examination, and other relevant areas to advance science-based understanding of nuclear fuels and actinide materials
  • Maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Presenting and report research results and publish scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for quality assurance, nuclear material control, radiological work, and general laboratory safety
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required:

  • PhD in nuclear engineering, materials science, or a related field
  • Possess a strong background in materials science as evidenced by prior work and publications, a background in nuclear fuel materials is preferred but not required
  • Prior experience with scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques is preferred
  • Prior experience with mechanical testing is also a preferred skill
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to produce high impact publications and conference presentations in the field of nuclear materials
  • Capability to successfully function both independently as well as in small and moderate size teams
  • Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Applicants must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
  • Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
