Requisition Id 3702

Overview:

We are seeking a Post-doctoral Research Associate who will focus on materials science and engineering research related to plasma-materials interactions and plasma-facing components for fusion energy. This position resides in the Nuclear Structural Materials Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, the incumbent will conduct research focused on processing and evaluation of advanced plasma-facing materials and material systems for plasma-facing components for use in magnetically confined fusion energy systems. Research objectives will include understanding the effects of plasma-interactions and other operating environment factors in plasma-facing materials and components with microstructures specific to advanced manufacturing routes. Material systems of interest include but not limited to tungsten metal and alloys. As a part of our research team, the successful candidate will utilize their technical strengths to enrich the team, learn from team members with diverse expertise, and develop specialties and a career path through collaborations and relevant training. Moreover, this position is anticipated to interact with plasma-materials interactions research conducted in the Fusion Energy Division, Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate of ORNL in assisting the mission of Fusion Energy Science Program at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead in the development of science-based mechanistic understanding of properties of plasma-facing component materials manufactured by advanced processing routes and their interactions with plasma and other operating environment factors of plasma-facing components in fusion energy systems
  • Leverage the capabilities of ORNL including advanced manufacturing, advanced materials characterization tools, unique materials testing facilities, and relevant theory and modeling to resolve some of the critical materials science questions for plasma-facing materials and components
  • Produce high impact publications in key peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations in the fields of general materials science and fusion materials science and technologies. Participate in writing research proposals.
  • Work with team members in the areas of fusion materials, radiation materials science, advanced and additive manufacturing, materials plasma exposure experiment, advanced materials characterization, fusion technologies, and other relevant areas to advance science of the plasma-facing materials and plamsa-materials interactions.
  • Maintain a high level of scientific productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for quality assurance, nuclear material control, radiological work, and general laboratory safety.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in materials science, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline completed within the last five years.
  • Strong background in processing and/or characterization of metallic or ceramic materials
  • Scientific productivity demonstrated by a record of lead-authored publications (published, accepted, or submitted)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experiences in plasma-materials interactions, fusion reactor materials, or nuclear materials research
  • Familiarity with at least one basic materials characterization tool (eg, scanning electron microscopy), one surface characterization tool (eg, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and one mechanical test method (eg, nano-indentation)
  • Hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
