Overview:

As a postdoctoral research associate, you will carry out the fundamental investigation of nanomaterials for energy-storage applications. This position resides in the Chemical Sciences Division, Nanomaterials Chemistry Group, in the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The selected candidate will work in close collaboration with other researchers involved in the project.

The Nanomaterials Chemistry Group within the Chemical Sciences Division at ORNL currently has a postdoctoral position available for an inorganic, organic, physical, polymer, or analytical chemist with expertise in electrolyte chemistry and/or electrode architectures (eg, nanoporous carbon) to develop fundamental understanding of advanced energy storage processes. The primary focus will be on the synthesis, purification, and characterization of advanced electrolyte systems and novel carbon electrode materials and their correlation to performance. These materials will be utilized to probe fundamental processes in energy storage. The program will have a strong collaborative component with characterization (eg, electron microscopy, electrochemical study, neutron scattering) and computational scientists working in the same project.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Synthesis of novel electrolytes and/or electrode materials.
  • Evaluate electrochemical properties of the new electrolyte or electrode materials for energy storage.
  • Collaborate with ORNL postdoctoral research associates and staff who are involved in structural characterization and atomistic modeling.
  • Participate in the development of new ideas and projects.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
Basic Qualifications:
  • A PhD in material science, inorganic, physical, organic, polymer, or analytical chemistry or a closely related field, completed within the last five years.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the synthesis and characterization of carbon electrode materials, electrolytes, and nanoparticles
  • Expertise in standard purification methods and characterization by the standard tools including electrochemical methods, mass spectrometry, NMR, FTIR, etc.
  • An excellent track record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience.
  • Motivated and safety conscious.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Able to set priorities, multi-task, and adapt to ever-changing research needs.

Special Requirement:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
