The Director of Rail and Intermodal Logistics will direct, plan, coordinate and oversee rail and intermodal logistics processes including utilization of ramp facilities and personnel. This position will plan services, resources, methods and controls through contract negotiations to meet capacity, quality, cost and safety standards. This position will establish tracking for evaluation and analysis that provides for continuous improvement in quality and cost containment. The Director of Rail and Intermodal Logistics will recommend and implement improvements and/or modifications of process, methods and resource utilization and will be the primary business contact between Ashley Distribution (ADS) and Carrier Sales and/or Management. This position will support new and expanded business opportunities to develop existing and new over-the-road (OTR) carriers, working closely with the Director of Business Development and ADS Operations. This position also works closely with carrier operations.

The Director of Rail and Intermodal Logistics is accountable for maintaining OTR carrier, rail and intermodal profit & loss (P&L) information, including income and operating expenses.

Primary Job Functions

1. Analyze, evaluate, plan and negotiate intermodal, rail and small package rates and services including ramp operation, equipment availability, drayage services, operation methods and staffing requirements.

2. Measure, monitor, correct, adjust and improve on-time performance and accuracy of data in key OTR carrier intermodal lanes to support inbound, transfer and billable volume.

3. Train, advise and report on industry activities, trends alternatives and options.

4. Work in conjunction with fleet operations, shipping, imports and product planning to plan, forecast and ensure timely product flow; work on cross-functional teams related to import and export activities.

5. Recommend and implement improvements.

6. Make employment decisions and/or recommendations on hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, pay adjustments, etc.

7. Coordinate and manage the work of employees by directing members of the team to meet the area's goals. Audit regularly to ensure standard operating procedures are being adhered to.

8. Manage employee performance and assist employees in making improvements to their performance through coaching, mentoring and administering performance reviews. Recommend, plan and/or implement employee training and skill development activities.

9. Audit, maintain and ensure employee time-keeping and absentee records are accurate.

10. Communicate company and departmental issues and goals and facilitate employee growth and development through weekly team meetings, regular individual employee meetings, coaching, training, and company-offered learning opportunities.

11. Manage resources to optimize equipment, facilities, employees, methods and materials.

12. Demonstrate the Company's Core and Growth Values in the performance of all job functions.

Job Qualifications

Bachelor degree in Business Administration, Logistics or related area, Required

10 years of carrier, rail and/or intermodal sales and/or operations experience, Required

Rail/intermodal rate structures, service, options and alternatives

Industry contacts and resources
