Open Innovations Manager (Permanent)

Location: Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire Country: UK
 
Summary
Tesco labs is Tesco Technology's research and development team. Based in Welwyn Garden City, the team was conceived to shine light on future opportunities and challenges for Tesco.

Labs is a trusted source on emerging technology and is focused on prototyping and testing new ideas in technology areas that could significantly impact customers and the business in the future.

Main Responsibilities
The position reports into the Head of Open Innovation and Tech Comms. Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role's key responsibilities and measures:

Open Innovation
. Create a launch plan for our new API platform, which recruits 3rd party developers with the aim of maintaining an active developer community. Play an active role in representing and linking the community to the wider business, celebrating success through story-telling, and integrating this into wider tech comms.
. Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships with a view to future partnerships and collaborations.

Events
Design and deliver regular internal and external events from start to completion to drive engagement and generate excitement around innovation. You'll get the chance to put on amazing events that are judged by influential people from across the business, but more importantly you'll give people the opportunity to be creative outside their day job, and bring their ideas to life. These will include:
. Company-wide hackathons, including external hackathons for suppliers and start-ups.
. Innovation education sessions such as Lunch and Learns (finding and inviting entrepreneurs to come and speak at Tesco), masterclasses and Labs Open Days.
. External events like TJam where we run speed-networking sessions with startups.
. Exhibiting, sponsoring and managing participation at trade events such as Retail Week's annual Tech event, and London Tech Week.
. Working with the wider Technology team to find appropriate speaking opportunities in order to promote our teams and products - from meet ups to trade conferences, and crafting relevant and inspiring messages to be delivered to these varied audiences.

Communications
Raising awareness of Tesco Technology, both in the UK and in India, and getting up to 500k colleagues worldwide excited and inspired about new technology, and the ways that they can get involved in what we do.

* Devise and implement a consistent internal engagement programme of communications and events for colleagues both within Technology and in other departments, to enthuse them about our work, potential collaboration opportunities, and ways in which they can get involved.
. Writing, delivering and measuring compelling communications and driving internal engagement. This includes blog posts, articles, the tescolabs website and other content, plus editing and curating others'. Sourcing interesting innovation stories from across the business
. Script, produce and edit videos highlighting Labs projects, events, and more!
. Creating multifaceted communications plans and strategies for the team's events and projects, liaise with central Comms team to keep them informed of upcoming projects and identify appropriate ways in which to promote these
. Devise and deliver a comms plan to drive Labs engagement in India. Work with NWTs and third parties to deliver this where appropriate
. Excite everyone about innovation and lead by example.
. Foster collaboration across teams and departments, and bring people and ideas together
. Engage with and influence stakeholders at all levels and generate enthusiasm and excitement around innovation in order to ensure that 'culture' is discussed and understood
. Work with teams across technology to open up access to Tesco APIs and help manage the external developer community
. Create, co-create and source content for our upcoming Tesco Technology blog site
. Work with Recruitment and People marketing team to drive ongoing Technology-specific recruitment activities (including briefing and managing 3rd party agencies on deliverables)
. Help expand our schools outreach activities, designed to engage and enthuse KS1 and KS2 children about STEM subjects, and technology in retail.
. The crucial one: maintaining a distinct, individual and welcoming tone of voice in all comms, and avoiding business speak and jargon at all costs! We want to make everyone feel that they are innovators, and we aren't an 'elite' team. It's our mission to involve as many people from all over the company as possible in innovation.

Ideal Candidate

Key Skills and Experience
You'll need to have demonstrated experience of:
. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
. An understanding of new technologies and customer trends
. A passion for innovation and a desire to make a BIG difference to company culture
. Marketing and managing social media channels
. Internal Communications in a large organisation
. Organising successful internal and external events to engage colleagues
. Design & Video production skills a plus
. Bachelors degree or demonstrable experience required, advanced degree a plus

Personal
. Flexibility, ability to plan and organise, responsiveness, creativity, self-starter
. Able to build solid working relationships with peers and senior leadership
. Ability to demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and disciplines within the organisation
. Someone who wants to have fun while they work
