Contract Term: 6 months

Location: Predominantly remote - will need to attend Newcastle office as and when required

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK's biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. Working with DWP, you will be helping us to drive our priorities to:

As a Data Scientist, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Lead the activities supporting service design in Health, as well as working on technical tasks supporting all work strands in the Data Team.
  • Work with stakeholders within and outside of Health Digital to identify opportunities for quantitative research, explorative analysis and analytical model development work to support the Health Transformation Programme objectives. You will need to prioritise the backlog of these activities considering business need and capability within the team, identifying dependencies on other areas.
  • Work with other leads in the Data Team as well as the Health Data Lead and the Senior Data Product Manager to ensure that work is prioritised across all delivery strands within the team.
  • Drive the development of new capabilities within the team, in particular in the area or MLOps, Analytics Standards and ways of working.
  • Work as a technical data professional, applying specialist programming skills with data analytics techniques in order to find and share patterns in data that can be put into action and drive better decisions across the business.
  • Work in the Health Data and Analysis Platform, which is hosted in Microsoft Azure, using DataBricks and other notebook environments to deliver analysis and build models in SQL and python. You will use a variety of data sources: event-based application data, Google Analytics, DWP admin data, clerical MI.

Essential Criteria:

SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be eligible and willing to undergo these checks.

  • Experience Python, SQL, R and Spark as languages.
  • Experience of machine learning.
  • Experience with free text analysis
  • Experience of working with evolving source services, visualisation, data insights, free text analysis, time series analysis, reproduceable analytical pipelines, design develop and maintain analytical solutions
  • Experience working with large or complex data sets including:
    • Identifying and gathering disparate data,
    • Exploring and documenting data,
    • Extensive data manipulation,
    • Iteration of analytical techniques
    • Visualisation of the results.
