Job Summary
Amazon is looking for a passionate, talented, tech lead and manager of Applied Scientists with a strong computer vision and machine learning background to grow and lead best-in-class research team in Amazon AI Labs. You will balance computer vision research and product deliveries.

You will foster a culture of research and innovation in the organization, guide scientists to push the state-of-the-art of research in the field, and publish peer-reviewed papers of your research outcomes. Simultaneously, you will partner with engineering and business teams to invent and build new services and APIs that surprise and delight AWS customers. Amazon AI Labs Computer Vision is part of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world-leading provider of cloud services.

The AI Labs Computer Vision team regularly publishes at top conferences and works with Product and Engineering teams to launch computer vision APIs such as Amazon Rekognition, Textract, and model customization services such as Custom Labels and Lookout for Vision. We are looking for an Applied Science Manager/Tech Lead for our fast growing AWS Rekonition services research.

You will drive research on large scale person and face understanding. You will push the limits of what can be done in the ares of factial recognition, bias and fairness in AI and explainable AI at the scale of AWS. You will bring research out of the lab setting and into the open world where new challenges and discoveries will await.

You'll lead the team to solve these challenges and share them back into the community through publications, hosted workshops and tutorials. You will have to be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity and produce solutions that scale to a diversity of customer problems. You will partner with engineering and business teams to solve hard science problems inspired by real-world use-cases, have access to virtually endless data and computational resources, and to world-class engineers and developers that can help bring your research ideas into the world.

We offer flexibility in working hours and encourage you to find your own balance between your work and personal lives.Basic qualifications* PhD in computer science, mathematics or related discipline with focus on computer vision or machine learning, or equivalent experience* Scientific thinking and the ability to invent, a track record of thought leadership and contributions that have advanced the field* Publication record of papers at relevant top conferences in computer vision and machine learning* More than 5 years of experience conducting CV research and software development* More than 2 years of experience managing a team of scientists* Experience hiring, growing and retaining researchers Demonstrated ability interacting with product and engineering teams to frame business problems into scalable computer vision solutions.* Excellent written and spoken communication skills.Preferred qualification.

10+ years of experience conducting research in computer vision and machine learning* 5+ years of experience leading research projects that include highly talented science teams responsible for developing and owning complex algorithms that go beyond the state of the art.* 5+ years of experience managing research teams.* Experience in the design, development, evaluation, deployment and updating of multiple customer facing computer vision and deep learning solutions.
