Located in Frederick, MD, in the heart of Frederick County, the third fastest growing county in Maryland, Fort Detrick is home to U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, Army Medical research Institute of Infectious Diseases and the National Cancer Institute. Fort Detrick is the largest employer in Frederick County, Maryland. Historically, Fort Detrick was the center of the US biological weapons program. Since the discontinuation of that program, it has hosted most elements of the United States biological defense program.

REQUIREMENTS (duties include but are not limited to)
The Research Physician is responsible for conducting and being an investigator for clinical protocols and acquiring study data for regulatory purposes. The candidate must complete Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Subjects Protection (HSP), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training within 3 months from the date of acceptance of this position if the candidate is not current with this training.

The Research Physician shall serve as a Principal Investigator or Clinical Research Physician and provide expertise in the areas of clinical research and regulatory affairs as they relate to clinical studies, healthcare management, and technology-based training and education programs. Staff coordination is required at the USAMRIID level and with other coordinating services or agencies.
  • As a Principal Investigator or Clinical Research Physician, Participate in the planning and design of methodologies to attain scientific objectives.
  • Participate in writing and executing protocols for phase I and II clinical trials of vaccines related to bio-defense prophylactic, and therapeutic agents including but not limited to conducting physical exams, administering vaccines or other products, assessing adverse events and evaluating data related to safety and immune response of the test article.
  • Participate in other related protocols and clinical trials conducted by the Division of Medicine, USAMRIID.
  • Write reports of research activities and results/outcomes for submission to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and preparing manuscripts of research activities and results/outcomes for publication as assigned by Chief, Division of Medicine or Chief, Department of Clinical Research.
  • Participate in meetings and presentations related to assigned duties and/or work performed.
  • As required, trains and assists coworkers and technical staff in special knowledge and skills.
  • Provide continuing written summaries, reports, and other documents as needed in support of Division of Medicine, Department of Clinical Research Unit.
  • The physician shall perform duties and responsibilities independently based on broad guidelines and objectives provided by the supervisor and own initiative. Performance is evaluated based on the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of results, conformance to established policies, standards and objectives, and, effectiveness of communications and interpersonal skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have an M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited program/school.
  • Must have and maintain a current, valid, full, and unrestricted license in any of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Must have one of the following specialties: Board Certification in a Primary Care Specialty including Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Preventive Medicine, or Pediatrics with knowledge of adult medicine.
  • Must have experience in a professional position providing guidance and technical expertise in interdisciplinary/multi-service teams of professionals. This experience must include a high level of expertise gained by study and practice in an area such a preventive medicine, public health, travel medicine or other related field.
  • Shall typically be regarded as an expert in their field of medicine.
  • Must be GCP (Good Clinical Practice) trained or be willing to attend GCP training.
  • Shall be knowledgeable in the areas of clinical research and regulatory affairs as they relate to clinical studies, healthcare management, and technology-based training and education programs.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
